With the tournament just weeks away, injuries to key players have raised concerns. Tilak Varma and Washington Sundar are both currently sidelined due to fitness levels.
Chopra admitted the situation is not ideal but pointed out that time is still on India’s side.
“This is concerning,” Chopra said. “But today is January 15 and our first match is on February 7. There is still time, and hopefully injuries won’t be an issue when the World Cup begins.”
Tilak Varma’s Recovery Progress
Tilak Varma picked up an injury while representing Hyderabad in the Vijay Hazare Trophy earlier this month. He underwent surgery on January 7 and was discharged the following day. According to updates, his recovery is going well.
The BCCI has ruled him out of the first three T20Is against New Zealand. His return will depend on rehabilitation and fitness clearance. While his availability for the World Cup is not guaranteed, there is cautious optimism around his recovery timeline.
Washington Sundar is also a Concern
All-rounder Washington Sundar suffered a rib or side strain during the recent ODI series against New Zealand. He has been ruled out of the T20I matches, and his participation in the World Cup will depend on how quickly he regains full match fitness.
Chopra Defends Rohit Sharma
Chopra also came out strongly in support of Rohit Sharma, saying it makes little sense to judge his form right now.
“At this time, I see no logic in judging Rohit Sharma,” he said. “The next ODI is six months away. When he scores, it feels good. He has nothing to prove.”
He added that a big score in the upcoming match in Indore could help boost confidence.
Thoughts on 2027 ODI World Cup
When asked about Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli being part of the 2027 ODI World Cup, Chopra brushed aside age-related debates.
“You wouldn’t be asking this if the World Cup was tomorrow,” he said. They are batting very well right now.
