During the first ODI between India and New Zealand at the Kotambi Stadium, Harsha Bhogle made a rare and honest comment on air in support of young fast bowler Harshit Rana. “I really get bothered by the stories I read about Harshit Rana,” Bhogle said during the live broadcast. “I’ve actually had to change my algorithm so I don’t keep seeing all that nonsense.”

Why Rana’s Name Keeps Coming Up

Harshit Rana’s rise in Indian cricket has been quick. Since Gautam Gambhir took over as India’s head coach in 2024, Rana has been a regular part of the squad across formats. His selection ahead of bowlers like Arshdeep Singh has led to debates among fans and former players.

Former India captain and ex-chief selector Kris Srikkanth had earlier questioned Rana’s frequent inclusion, hinting at favouritism. In 2025, Srikkanth spoke about it on his YouTube channel, which added more fuel to the discussion.

Gambhir later responded by saying such criticism should focus on performances and not turn personal, especially when it involves a young player who is still settling into international cricket.

When the Debate Turned Ugly

What began as a cricketing debate soon turned unpleasant. Social media platforms were filled with harsh comments, accusations, and personal attacks aimed at Rana. Even during the Vadodara ODI, some fans continued to question his place in the playing XI.

Bhogle’s remarks appeared to be a response to this growing negativity. Rather than discussing selection calls, he highlighted how constant criticism can impact young players trying to establish their careers.

Letting the Ball Do the Talking

Despite the noise off the field, Harshit Rana has continued to deliver with the ball. In 2025, he picked up close to 20 wickets in ODIs and played a role in India’s Champions Trophy win. In the Vadodara match, he gave India an early boost by dismissing New Zealand openers Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls.

Bhogle’s message was simple but important. In the end, cricket should be judged by what happens on the field. For a young player like Harshit Rana, support and patience matter far more than the noise around him.
