In the high stakes Qualifier 2 of IPL 2025 held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, both team captains Shreyas Iyer of Punjab Kings and Hardik Pandya of Mumbai Indians found themselves in trouble with the IPL authorities due to slow over-rate violations.
The match may have delivered some exciting moments on the field, but off the field, things weren’t so smooth for either side. Both captains were penalized under the IPL’s Code of Conduct for failing to complete their overs in the allocated time.
Shreyas Iyer Fined for Second Over-Rate Offence
This was Punjab Kings’ second slow over-rate offence of the season, which meant stricter penalties were applied. As a result, skipper Shreyas Iyer was slapped with a fine of ₹24 lakh.
Not just Iyer the punishment extended to the entire playing XI, including the Impact Player. Each player was fined either ₹6 lakh or 25% of their match fee, depending on which amount was lower. This collective penalty is part of the league’s ongoing efforts to ensure smooth match timings and avoid unnecessary delays.

Hardik Pandya Penalized for Third Offence
Mumbai Indians didn’t escape the radar either. Captain Hardik Pandya was fined ₹30 lakh, as this marked MI’s third slow over-rate offence in the ongoing season.
The penalty for the rest of the playing XI, including the Impact Player, was much steeper in this case either ₹12 lakh or 50% of their match fee, whichever was lesser.
With both teams falling short in managing their bowling time effectively, the IPL Governing Council has made it clear that repeat violations will not be taken lightly. Maintaining the correct over rate is crucial not only for adhering to the tournament schedule but also for ensuring fair play and a smooth viewing experience
In a thrilling knockout match at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Punjab Kings (PBKS) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by 5 wickets to secure a spot in the IPL 2025 Final.
After being put in to bat, Mumbai Indians posted 203/6 in 20 overs. Despite a strong total, MI couldn’t defend the target as PBKS chased it down in just 19 overs, finishing at 207/5.
Leading from the front, captain Shreyas Iyer played a match-winning knock, guiding his team to victory under pressure. His calm and composed innings earned him the Man of the Match award.
With this win, PBKS moves into the IPL 2025 Final with momentum on their side.
