Reports suggesting that the upcoming ODI at Lord’s could be Rohit’s final appearance for India have been firmly denied by the board.
Speaking to PTI, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia dismissed the retirement rumours and confirmed that Rohit remains an important part of India’s ODI setup.
“There are a lot of speculations going on in the media about Rohit Sharma’s future. I want to firmly assert that there has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord’s. Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team and he will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things. In other words, the Lord’s ODI won’t be his last match,” Saikia said.
The statement comes as a major relief for Indian cricket fans, with rumours about Rohit’s international future gaining momentum in recent weeks. The BCCI’s clarification indicates that the experienced opener continues to be a key figure in India’s long-term ODI plans.
Adding further weight to the discussion, cricket expert Vimal Kumar revealed that a senior BCCI official also denied any immediate retirement plans for the Indian skipper. According to Kumar, the official confirmed that Rohit Sharma has no intention of retiring from ODI cricket and remains fully committed to representing India.
Kumar also stated that India captain Shubman Gill strongly supports Rohit’s presence in the ODI squad as the team prepares for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup. The team management reportedly values Rohit’s experience, leadership, and ability to perform on the biggest stages, making him an integral part of India’s roadmap for the next World Cup.
Winning the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup is believed to be Rohit Sharma’s biggest ambition. After leading India to memorable campaigns in recent years, the veteran batter is reportedly determined to guide the Men in Blue to another global title before considering his future in the format.
For now, the BCCI’s official stance has ended speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma’s retirement, confirming that the Indian captain remains very much in India’s ODI plans. As preparations continue for the road to the 2027 World Cup, Rohit’s experience and leadership are expected to play a crucial role in shaping India’s campaign.
